They will each receive $2500 to put toward continuing their education. This scholarship program, now in its 41st year, was established in 1982 as a lasting reminder of the All-America City honor awarded to the City of Valdez in 1965 and 1981. The scholarship program aims to provide educational assistance to selected Valdez youth who have shown civic involvement and the potential to significantly contribute to the City of Valdez in civic affairs. Valdez Police Department Awards Educational Advancement ScholarshipsOn May 22, at the Valdez High School Scholarship Night, the Valdez Police Department announced the recipients of this year’s VPD Education Advancement Scholarship. The scholarship is a $1500 award based on success within the classroom, involvement in extracurricular and volunteer activities, and the desire and intention to pursue higher-learning opportunities. Additionally, successful applicants must demonstrate good character, defined by personal conduct in keeping with the core values of the Valdez Police Department: Integrity, Respect, Professionalism, and Valor. The scholarship is in its fifth year now. It is funded entirely by the sale (at auction) of seized property that has been forfeited to the City via court adjudication, donations to the Valdez Police Department, and fundraising efforts using the jointly owned Valdez Fire Department/Valdez Police Department dunk tank that many citizens take pleasure in partaking in each year. The application review is traditionally a difficult process for the selection committee. This year especially so, as there were two deserving applicants, and numerous votes failed to yield a unanimous result. For the first time, there were two recipients of the VPD EAS scholarship: Dillon Fowler and Anthony Mann. Congratulations to each of them.
