Valdez, AK – At approximately 1:30 p.m., a Valdez City Schools staff member reported to the School Resource Officer that they had received a report of a student in crisis. The initial investigation revealed the student had left campus in their vehicle and drove northbound on the Richardson Highway out of Valdez city limits. Police requested assistance from the Alaska State Troopers - Glennallen post to contact the driver and conduct a welfare check.

While Troopers were en route, the driver turned around and headed southbound toward Valdez at a high rate of speed. Valdez Police responded to milepost 12 and worked in conjunction with the Alaska Department of Transportation to close the Richardson Highway and establish a road barricade to safeguard the public.

The barricade was effective in stopping the driver without incident. There was no damage to property, and no one was injured. The driver was taken into Title 47 protective custody without incident.
