City of Valdez Awarded $880,000 Child Care Community INNOVATION Grant

For Immediate Release: November 29, 2023

Valdez, AK – The City of Valdez is pleased to announce the receipt of a Child Care Community INNOVATION Grant totaling $880,000. The Child Care Community INNOVATION Grant is administered by thread in partnership with the State of Alaska Child Care Program Office (CCPO) to support programs and communities investing in child care.

The Valdez City Council established a Child Care Crisis Task Force on February 21, 2023, adopting Resolution 23-07. This citizen’s advisory group is tasked with creating a strategic plan to address the child care crisis in our community and provide other recommendations to strengthen Valdez’s early childhood system. It was created in response to a dire lack of options for young children and their families in Valdez.

The grant will fund the creation of a strategic plan to address the ongoing child care crisis in Valdez and to ensure swift implementation of the plan once completed. The work of the task force will be to provide recommendations to the City Council for short, middle and long-term actions, including specific, actionable steps, in the following four areas:

  • Analysis of existing buildings
  • assessment of management structures
  • determination of funding mechanisms
  • stabilization of the early education workforce

The Task Force is made up of representatives from Valdez City Schools, Prince William Sound College, Providence Valdez Medical Center, Alyeska Pipeline Service Company, Valdez Native Tribe, the United States Coast Guard Station Valdez, and Valdez Zero to Three With Families Alliance.

Clarification, Nov. 30, 2023: The Child Care Crisis Task Force, a group comprised of volunteers from the community, met every two weeks from March 30 to October 5, 2023, during which time a strategic plan was drafted. The draft strategic plan is currently being finalized and will be presented to the City Council in January, outlining the recommendations for spending the Child Care Community INNOVATION Grant funds. Grant funds will be administered by the city but will be spent directly on increasing the capacity for and sustainability of licensed child care in the community.
