[ARCHIVED] Reminder - Deadline Approaching for Property Tax Appeals

tax appeal reminder- finger with string

Reminder to Valdez residents that property tax appeal forms are due to the City Clerk's office by 5:00 PM on Friday, March 31st, 2023.

State law (AS 29.45.110(a)) requires that property assessments be at “full and true value”, which is defined in the statute as the “estimated price that the property would bring in an open market and under the then prevailing market conditions in a sale between a willing seller and a willing buyer both conversant with the property and with prevailing general price levels.” This means that an assessed value should reflect what the property would sell for in current market conditions.

For an overview of the appeals process and legal requirements you can click HERE.

You can also find a video of the Board of Equalization training that City Council members were provided with HERE. This training provided by the city’s legal staff and assessor covered the legal guidelines the BOE members must follow and touches on the assessment process as well.
