For immediate release: 07/01/2022 11:00 a.m.

Valdez, AK - The City of Valdez has prohibited the discharge of fireworks within Valdez City limits due to the ongoing dry conditions across the state, current wildfire activity around the state, and the limited resources to respond to new wildfires.

In addition, the State Forester for the Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection (DOF) has issued an Emergency Burn Closure Order beginning Friday, July 1, at 11:59 p.m. This order restricts all burning that requires a local or state permit, including uncontained cooking, warming, and signaling fires, as well as backcountry campfires. The order covers all state, private, and municipal lands within the following Boroughs and Division of Forestry and Fire Protection areas:

  • Kenai Peninsula Borough
  • Matanuska Susitna Borough
  • Denali Borough
  • Fairbanks North Star Borough
  • Town of Delta and surrounding areas
  • Town of Tok and surrounding areas
  • Town of Glennallen, Copper River Basin and surrounding areas

Cooking or warming fires are allowed if they are contained in a steel ring or device like a charcoal grill.
