New Gilson Middle School Construction Project
Junior High School. The new 56,125 SF school will include classrooms, career
tech education, a new gym, wrestling room, wood shop, track & field, and
reconfigured traffic flows and parking. Construction will began early June 2013 and
is scheduled to be complete December 2014.
Project Update
August 2014Harris S&G finished spreading geotextile fabric for the artificial turf, finished grading around the athletic field, placed landscape boulders, and spread special sand to restore the Little League field. S&G Landscaping finished spreading topsoil and seeding slopes, planted trees and shrubs, and hydro-seeded the snow storage area to control erosion. McKinley Fence finished installing chain link fence and gates around the athletic field and the Little League field. Beyond the Turf finished installing drainage grid and laying artificial turf, inserted markings, numbers and soccer lines, spread sand and rubber pellet infill for the turf, and completed the final grooming.
Dawson finished the high school (HS) west canopy except for soffit lights; finished concrete stairs to the athletic field; finished rubberized surface for playground; installed support posts and mounted the football scoreboard; placed concrete shot and discuss pads, prepared and caulked joints at walkways and snow guard panels; installed cover over the propane tank; refurbished and covered HS electrical cabinets; removed field office trailers; cleaned up the site; and demobilized equipment and tools. A Carlisle roofing representative inspected the roof membrane and Interior Alaska Roofing repaired defects required for issuance of the roof warranty.
Inside, Dawson finished installing door hardware, bathroom items and room signs; installed gym equipment and wall graphics; fabricated and installed housings for operable door mechanisms; installed wrestling mats and custom thresholds at doors in the Gym area; worked on Punch List and Owner requested items. Megawatt installed canopy fixtures, power to CTE shop equipment, performed troubleshooting as needed, commissioned equipment and worked on Punch List items. ATS worked on telecom and intercom systems and performed troubleshooting. Mantech commissioned equipment, installed the fuel day tank for the HS boiler room, installed ducts for noise attenuation in several classrooms and worked on Mechanical Punch List. Chinook Fire Protection finished installing seismic braces. All Wall finished patching sheetrock and touching up paint. Bell Tech finished final cleaning. Dawson and subcontractors provided training for Owner personnel.
Artists installed stained glass panels above the main entrance, fused glass fish above fireplace area, and placed a portrait of George Gilson. Saxton Bradley assembled and placed furniture throughout the building. Allison’s Relocation moved administration, teacher, shop and exercise materials and equipment from storage and HHES into the new building.
The State Fire Marshall inspected the building and issued a report with no deficiencies. Teachers and staff occupied the building and started preparing for the first day of classes. The final Certificate of Occupancy was issued August 27th. The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and public tours occurred on August 28th.
