Safety Tips
The Valdez Fire Department loans chimney brushes out to the public. Just stop by and ask to sign them out. Listed below are some tips and safety precautions for using a chimney:
- A chimney fire is the combustion of residue deposits referred to as creosote, on the inner surfaces of chimney tiles, flue liners, stove pipes, etc.
- If your chimney catches on fire, do not attempt to extinguish it as this could result in injuring yourself. Instead, get yourself and everyone else outside of the structure and call 911 to report the fire.
- Steps to avoid this buildup of deposits include running appliances hot during initial ignition phase regularly, building short hotter fires, and regular cleaning of flues.
